World Backup Day

31. March 2024

Like every year, this 31st March is celebrated as World Backup Day, or day of backup copy creation. Backup means creation and safeguarding of digital copies of all important databases, such as personal or business video recordings or photographs, audio recordings and important documents. Digital data that we create bear greater value than the devices we keep them on, because as the devices become increasingly more accessible, the recorded memories, in contrast, cannot be easily re-created, and their value increases with time.

On the other hand, cyber attacks become more sofisticated on a daily basis and since their attack technique is based on encryption of data kept on devices and information systems, the users get locked out of their personal data until they pay ransom to cyber criminals. Regular creation of backup copies is the proper way to protect oneself and one’s digital data from cyber attacks, as the keeping of the copies of important data enables the users to always be one step ahead of cyber attackers. An ideal strategy for backup data copy creation is a so-called 3-2-1 strategy, which implies the creation of three backup copies, two of which are stored on different media, with the third one being kept in a remote location, such as Cloud service.
